On March 5, the Japanese Self Defense Force (or JMSDF) commissioned its first conventional submarine equipped with lithium-ion batteries. Eleventh ship in the Sลryลซ class, the ลryลซ is also the first submarine in the world to be fitted with this type of accumulator which significantly increases the diving performance of submarines.
Although they have many advantages, li-ion batteries are not without defaults. Far from being a quick fix, they nevertheless interest many shipbuilders, notably the French Naval Group, because of the operational advantages they can offer.
