Summary 2020: Major technological advances in Defense in 2020

If 2020 will go down in history as the year of the great Covid-19 pandemic, it will also be, in terms of Defense technologies, a pivotal year marking the transition between the technological vision inherited from the Cold War which had little changed in these years. Last 30 years, and the disruptive technological approaches underway in many armed forces, and in many research laboratories. Among these many and varied advances, some deserve special attention.

1- Hypersonic Weapons

Hypersonic weapons have been at the heart of the concerns of the vast majority of major technological nations. The subject is not new, since the Kh47m2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile has been in service for more than a year in Russia, but 2020 will have been the year in which hypersonic weapons became one of the main players in the new arms race. In Russia, a pioneer in this field, 2020 will have marked testing of the 3M22 Tzirkon hypersonic naval missile begins, as well as the entry into service of the first strategic systems carrying the Avangard hypersonic glider. The country also announced the development of new more compact versions of the Kinzhal and Tzirkon missiles, to extend its use in particular on board the new Su-57 fighters.
