Since the public presentation of the Kh47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile by Vladimir Putin in March 2018, the subject has become the top priority of the Pentagon, which launched several programs to equip the 4 American armies with it. Yes the US Air Force and the US Navy are working together to develop a hypersonic airborne cruise missile that can be launched from fighters and bombers of both air forces, the US Army and US Navy are also working together to develop a ballistic-type hypersonic missile launched at from a land or naval platform. All programs must produce the first operational missiles for 2023 and 2024, so as to be able to counter the rise of Russian or Chinese threats, ahead in this area.
But the White House's ambition does not stop with a commissioning date. Problem, it's much easier said than done, as the implementation of these missiles differs from that of cruise missiles like the BGM-109 Tomahawk currently in service.
