Faced with the delays and operational limitations of the F-35 (particularly in terms of range and payload), the American air force seems particularly attached to replacing its older F-15C Eagles with… new F-15s. Indeed, if the US Air Force maintains its objective of acquiring 1700 F-35 monoreactors from Lockheed Martin, it intends at the same time to integrate into squadrons one or two hundred F-15EX Advanced Eagle, a new variant of the F-15 Eagle jet. from Boeing.
Until now, it seemed agreed that the USAF's Advanced Eagles would be equipped with the same engines as the last variants of the F-15 exported to South Korea, Singapore or even in the Middle-East. As part of the acquisition of F-15EX in several consecutive batches, the US Air Force had therefore approached General Electric, manufacturer of the F110-GE-129 reactor. The American engine manufacturer then had to prepare to produce up to 480 F110 engines, enough to propel more than 220 F-15EX, with a large number of spare engines.
