The US Army advances in electronic and cyber warfare capabilities on the battlefield

With the return of tensions with Russia and China, Western armies have set out to find newelectronic and cyber warfare capabilities after 30 years of wasteland following the end of the cold war and the anti-terrorist wars of the 2000s.

The subject has become much more pressing in recent months, with the lessons of the war in Ukraine. Indeed, if at the beginning of the conflict, the performances of the so dreaded Russian electronic warfare systems proved to be disappointing, Moscow quickly rectified the situation by switching to a defensive posture, and now imposes itself in an indisputable way on the electromagnetic spectrum, severely handicapping the capabilities of Ukrainian drones and precision weapon systems.

It is in this context that fits the program which has just been entrusted to Lockheed-Martin by the US Army, and which aims to equip the echelons above the brigade (division, army corps) with advanced means of offensive and defensive electronic warfare for the benefit of its units.

The TLS-EAB program (Terrestrial Layer System โ€“ Echelons Above Brigade) aims to provide this echelon with a set of capabilities in the fields of electronic and cyber warfare, whether it involves depriving the adversary of his means of communication or geolocation, but also to identify and locate enemy systems to carry out artillery or aviation strikes.

For this, the TLS-EAB will have an array of jamming systems, but also cyber warfare and hacking resources, as well as transmitters intended to deceive enemy systems, for example by applying spoofing technologies to the adversary geolocation, or ghosts on its radar systems.

This is the second electronic warfare program won by Lockheed-Martin in recent months on behalf of the US Army. Previously, in July 2022, it indeed selected the industrialist for its TLS-BCT program, which aims to equip American combat brigades with Stryker vehicles equipped with electronic warfare capabilities as close as possible to the line of engagement.
