The Italian aeronautics and defense group Leonardo announced that it had invested in the American-Spanish company Skydweller Aero Inc, specialized in the design of solar drones, in order to design the first solar powered drone capable of transporting a significant load over a period of time, and almost unlimited distances. Among the many advantages of this technology, Leonardo highlights the role it could play in the restoration of services and infrastructure after a massive disaster, natural or not, and particularly in the event of destruction of communication networks or of the satellite network, which today provide many services essential to the action of the State, and in particular the armed forces. In this area, three main categories of technology have emerged in recent years.
