Husky submarines, Zircon missiles and Poseidon drone, the future of the Russian submarine fleet

While today, most of the submarine 65 used by the Russian Navy are inherited from the Soviet era, such as the Akula SSNs, the Oscar SSGNs, the Delta SSBNs and the SSK Kilo, new sub classes. -marines began to be delivered, such as SSBN Boreï, SSN Iassen, or SSK Lada.

But beyond these new submarines symbolizing the renewal of the Russian naval industry, it is developing a new class of submersibles which will constitute the heart of the Russian navy beyond 2030: the Husky class.

Presented as a 5th generation submarine, the Husky will be a versatile executive class, making it possible to produce attack submarines, submarines using long-range cruise missiles, and ballistic missile-launching submarines.

The development of the Husky class is taking place concurrently with that of new generation weapons, first and foremost the Zircon anti-ship hypersonic missile, which can be launched from a ship, a submarine or an aircraft. Given to exceed mach 8 in the final phase and to have a range of 1000 km, the Zircon, the prototype of which was tested last year, cannot be intercepted by any of the anti-missile systems existing today.

Russia is also developing the autonomous Status-6 torpedo, now called Poseidon. Powered by a miniaturized nuclear boiler room, this torpedo is said to have a range of more than 6000 km, enough to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Fully autonomous and capable of reaching depths greater than 1000 m, it carries a nuclear or conventional charge. Thus equipped, it would be able to fulfill numerous missions, but it is its capacity to impose a blockade on a military or civilian port which appears to be the most effective. Note that some experts have hypothesized that this weapon could be used to trigger tectonic or seismic movements capable of causing tsunamis, while others consider this idea far-fetched.

We see, in terms of underwater warfare as well as for armored combat or air superiority, Russia has been able to concentrate its resources to develop weapon systems and tactics that make the most of the weaknesses of its potential adversary, namely NATO. This is one of the reasons why a country, economically and demographically inferior to the European members of NATO, manages to impose intense military pressure on Europe, requiring the permanent protection of the United States.
