Miyako-Jima is an archipelago of islands of just over 150 km2 located some 300 km southwest of the island of Okinawa. The island is home to 45.000 inhabitants, and has an airport with a 2000-meter runway, as well as several fishing ports and a base for the Japanese self-defense land forces. What makes the interest of this small archipelago, is that it is located at almost exact distance from Okinawa and Taiwan, and that the island constitutes in fact a perfect point of support to control the Chinese naval and air movements. from the South China Sea to the Pacific or around Taiwan. In fact, it also represents a considerable hindrance for Beijing in its ambition to exert significant pressure on the autonomous island since 1949, and could even constitute a starting point for possible air or naval forces aimed at supporting Taiwan in the face of the People's Liberation Army.
