Recruitment Difficulties Could Threaten Canadian Air Force Programs

A few days ago, we published an analysis on the increasingly critical dimension that HR constraints play in the functioning of the armed forces, particularly in the West. But if some countries face very restrictive demographics, like Japan, others also see their armed forces encounter immense difficulties in recruiting and retaining the required profiles, even without demographics themselves being a problem. This is particularly the case of one of the oldest air forces on the planet, the Royal Canadian Air Force, originating from the Canadian Aviation Corps created in 1914 to support the British Commonwealth forces alongside the French against the Germans. However, if the RCAF (English acronym) today has 430 operational aircraft, they only have 12.000 men and women to achieve this. For comparison, the French Air and Space Force has 40.000 men, with less than 600 aircraft in the fleet. Clearly, Ottawa faces a serious problem in this area, and things are likely to get worse in the years to come.
