Located only 35 km from the North Korean border, the protection of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and its 10 million inhabitants, has always been a headache and a major issue for southern military planners. -Korean, especially since it is now within direct range of modern artillery systems such as the new North Korean M-152 2018 mm gun, whose estimated range would reach 40 km. Until now, the country had relied on a Patriot anti-missile shield and its powerful air force to neutralize this threat, but recent technological developments are now forcing planners to implement new solutions, also capable of well to intercept ballistic missiles as drones and artillery shells, in order to protect the economic and political heart of the country.
This is one of the reasons why the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, or DAPA, the state agency in charge of South Korean weapons programs, announced through the voice of Defense Minister Suh Wook, the launch of a program to develop a system of protection against air threats, comparable to the Israeli Iron Dome system, which showed the full extent of its capabilities a few weeks ago during the Hamas offensive against Israeli cities. The announced objective is to develop, by 2030, a system capable of intercepting surface-to-surface or air-to-surface missiles, but also rockets and artillery shells as well as drones, and to be able to face large-scale attacks aimed at saturating the defenses, in order to protect critical infrastructure and military bases, according to the press release. For this, the DAPA will invest a budget of 2.980 billion Won, or $ 2,56 billion, in order to develop, among other things, the interception missile that will be implemented by this system.
