Japan deploys anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile launchers to counter Chinese incursions between Taiwan and Okinawa

In recent weeks, the People's Republic of China and Taiwan have chained the show of force after the TAIPEI Act was proclaimed by Washington. However, the strengthening of Chinese naval and air deployments in the East China Sea also worries Tokyo, which has deployed on the island of Miyako several missile units of its land defense forces (JGSDF). Mobile shooting platforms for Type 12 anti-ship missiles and Type 03 anti-aircraft missiles were therefore deployed to control Chinese deployments between Taiwan and the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.

If the proximity of Taiwan to mainland China is generally well known, western observers can sometimes forget that Taiwan is also very close to Japan, or at least to its most western islands. If 600 km separate Taiwan from Okinawa, the island of Miyako is only 330 km away, and Yonaguni is even only 110 km from Taiwan. For Tokyo, the deployment of missile launchers in the region is helping to assert its sovereignty over these territories, including by having the means to actively control their exclusive economic zone.
