The JL-3 is intended to expand the capabilities of the JL-2 missile which equips the four Type 09IV nuclear ballistic missile submarines today, with four more expected to enter service in the coming years. The JL-2, derived from the DF-31 land-based missile, reaches a range of 12.000 km thanks to its two propulsion stages comprising solid and liquid fuel.
