The J-50 symbolizes the Chinese strategy between emerging demonstrator and industrial ramp-up

New images and videos dated 2026 showing Shenyang's J-50 stealth fighter suggest the launch of a flight campaign, following up on public appearances on December 26, 2024. Their attribution remains uncertain, but these clues, found on sites linked to Shenyang, indicate a shift from only ground sightings to flight activity deemed plausible, without official confirmation from Chinese authorities.

The J-50 was also highlighted during the parade on September 3, 2025 among so-called sixth-generation fighters, while Beijing accelerates the J-20 and J-35 while pushing technological building blocks.

The J-36 is distinguished by its three engines and a larger size compared to current heavy fighters.

On December 26, 2024, two tailless heavy fighters made a public appearance in China: one attributed to Shenyang and commonly known as the J-50, and the other, larger and identified as the Chengdu J-36. The J-36 is described as having three engines, while the J-50 has two, a difference that immediately presents a major structural divergence. The latter is one of the most enigmatic programs in Chinese aeronautics, leading to hypotheses for its potential use ranging from a future fleet for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) to a demonstrator intended to validate disruptive technologies.

Between 2024 and 2025, detailed images provided recurring technical clues about the J-50. They show a tailless airframe, the absence of vertical stabilizers, clearly pivoting wingtip surfaces, DSI-type supersonic air intakes without deflection feeding two engines, and aerodynamic integration designed for stealth. The nozzles appear to have a two-dimensional thrust vector and are bordered by serrated edges around the exhausts, indicating attention to their signature.

At the same time, the distinction between the J-50 and the J-36 became clearer. Observers reported in December 2025 the likely existence of a third J-36 prototype, an indication of a sustained production rate. By contrast, the J-50 is more compact, twin-engine, and still tailless. Observations of the J-50 are based primarily on a few images from December 2024 and 2025, which limits direct comparisons of their development levels.

The parade in Beijing on September 3, 2025, showcased, among other things, the Type 100 medium tank, the HQ-29 anti-ballistic missile system, and fifth- and sixth-generation fighter jets, including the J-50. Reports also indicated an acceleration in the production of the J-20 and J-35, while simultaneously pushing through the development of sixth-generation technology. This reflects a commitment to consolidating the fifth generation while preparing for the next, with emerging demonstrators and series production advancing in tandem before the expected turning point in 2026.

The J-50 appears in 2026 in flight images attributed to Shenyang Aircraft Corporation

After the 2024-2025 phase, marked by rare appearances in images and a highly controlled public presence, a new signal emerged in 2026 concerning the J-50. New images and videos attributed to the program suggest the start of the 2026 flight campaign, with the direct involvement of Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, which released new photos of its tailless stealth fighter. This suggests a shift from purely static images to plausible flight activity in 2026.
