Turkey wants to develop the most powerful destroyer in the Mediterranean theater

Since coming to power in 2003, RT Erdogan, first Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014, then President of the Republic of Turkey since that date, has undertaken a vast national effort in favor of the armies, with a budget that has gone into 20 years from $ 7 billion to over $ 20 billion, despite a Turkish lira devalued by 80% of its value over the same period. At the same time, he set out to develop a vast and robust national defense industry, with the emergence of several national and global players such as the Roketsan missile or the drone manufacturer Baykar. In the naval field, the effort was organized around a very ambitious program, the MILGEM program, whose launch dates back to 2004, and which today propels the Turkish military naval industry to the forefront of the European and world market.

The MILGEM program, which should make it possible to modernize the Turkish fleet by 2030 with entirely locally produced ships, consists of 3 classes of ship, the Ada class corvettes, the Istanbul class light frigates, and the TF destroyers. -2000. The construction of 4 Ada class anti-submarine corvettes took place between 2005 and 2015, and the 4 units of 2400 tonnes are now in service with the Turkish Navy. These economical and efficient ships were also ordered by Pakistan (4 elongated units of 3000 tons) and by Ukraine. In 2017, the manufacture of the first Istanbul class frigate began, a 3000-ton anti-submarine vessel but this time equipped with a 16-cell MDAS vertical launch system to accommodate as many surface-to-air missiles as possible. medium range HISAR. The frigate TCG Istanbul, the first unit of the eponymous class, was launched in January 2021, and should join active service in 2023. As for the destroyer TF-2000, it was undoubtedly one of the stars of IDEF 2021 which took place in istanbul from august 17 to 20.
