Athens will officially ask Washington for an Arleigh Burke destroyer

For several years, the Greek authorities have hoped to obtain from their American counterparts the loan or sale of a second-hand Arleigh Burke-class destroyer or a Ticonderoga-class cruiser, to strengthen its anti-aircraft capabilities and be in able to cope with the growing Turkish power. Until now, these requests, passed through military or technocratic channels, have never obtained favorable responses nor from Washington, and even less from the US Navy, which is struggling to maintain a minimum format to respond to the increase in operational pressure. But clearly, President Kyriakos Mitsotakis does not seem ready to abandon this ambition, and he even believes that now is the right time to bring this request through political channels, directly to the new American administration.

Concretely, the Greek authorities rely on several statements by American military officials suggesting that the US Navy would not be able to increase its overall ship size in the coming years, while new units of destroyers Arleigh Burke and Constellation frigates are to enter service. Therefore, Athens estimates that the US Navy will necessarily have to retire a few Burke-class destroyers, among the first ships to enter service, allowing Greece to offer to acquire a second-hand unit at a lower price. very competitive.
