US Congress imposes sanctions on Turkey for 2021

The 2021 US Defense Budget is today the subject of intense political battles between Congress and Donald Trump's Presidency, on many subjects. But Congress has also fully seized this opportunity to control or neutralize certain excesses in foreign policy undertaken by President Trump in recent years. One of the most sensitive aspects on the international scene, especially for Europe, of this American political showdown, is undoubtedly the obligation imposed on the American president, whoever he may be, to implement the sanctions provided for by CAATSA legislation against Turkey following the purchase of S-400 anti-aircraft batteries from Russia, within 30 days of the adoption of the Defense budget.

In addition, it gives the authorization to the American armed forces to dispose of the 6 F35A already assembled which were initially planned for Turkey, which could represent the opportunity sought by Athens to simultaneously acquire a minimum fleet of ready-to-use F35 aircraft, and take the opportunity to thumb his nose at his bellicose neighbor.

The 6 F35As built for the Turkish air force before the expulsion from the Ankara program can now be used (or sold) by the American armies.
