According to the Director General of Greek Armaments and Investments, Theodoros Lagios, Athens would have transmitted to Washington a formal request to acquire in a rapid schedule 18 to 24 F35A combat aircraft, the first 6 of which would be second-hand aircraft with a low number of flight hours, and which could be paid to the Hellenic Air Force in the first half of 2021. This potential order, which is obviously the consequence of a intense negotiation between the US and Greek authorities on defense issues, also relating to the acquisition of 4 MMSC frigates, is added to that of 18 planes Rafale to F3R standard which will soon be formalized by the Greek parliament.
On the other hand, various modernization programs relating to the Mirage 2000-5 and F-16 combat aircraft (which will be brought to block 70 Viper), as well as to the Meko 200 frigates in service with the Greek armies, have been signed. in recent months, or will be in the near future. Clearly, Athens has therefore undertaken a vast effort to intensively and rapidly reinforce its military assets, largely in response to the multiple tensions between the Greek and Turkish authorities, as well as their armies, in recent months.
