In 2018, Ottawa awarded the British BAe one of the largest military shipbuilding contracts of the past 20 years, for the design and construction of 15 new generation frigates for the Canadian Surface Combattante, or CSC. Based on the design of the Type 26 frigates, which will equip the Royal Navy but also the Royal Australian Navy, the exact characteristics of SCCs were heretofore unknown. This is no longer the case, since the Royal Canadian Navy this week published a document presenting in detail what will be these combatant surface ships, which will obviously have nothing to envy of their American or European counterparts.
151 meters long for a tonnage of 7.800 tonnes in load, the new Canadian frigates will hold more of the Destroyer than of the frigate. Construction of the first units will in all likelihood be launched in 2023, with the prospect of entering service between 2028 and 2029, to replace the 12 Halifax-class frigates that entered service between 1992 and 1996, and the 4 destroyers of the Iroquois class withdrawn from service between 2015 and 2017. Unlike European fleets, which have often favored several specialized classes to compose their fleet, Canada has chosen to harmonize its entire combat fleet, by giving each advanced versatility in operational capabilities.
