On Friday October 16, Airbus surprised its world by presenting announcing that the European aeronautics giant had launched a program aimed at designing, at the request of Spain, a training and attack aircraft intended to integrate, according to Airbus communication, in the FCAS program, like the US Air Force eT-7A . Like all programs of this type at the moment, Italian M346 au South Korean T-50 Golden Eagle, currently designated by the acronym AFJT for Airbus Fighter Jet Trainer, may evolve into a light single-seat fighter, specialized in attack. The program, the amount of which has not been specified, will be entrusted to the Spanish subsidiaries of the European aeronautical group.
Concretely, the AFJT will be in the form of a single or two-seater single-engine light fighter depending on the version, equipped with a swept wing with apex and a most classic rear plane with fin, allowing the aircraft to 'evolve at transonic speed. It may or may not be equipped with a cannon, and with an AESA multifunction radar, as well as a flight system capable, in particular, of optimizing training by creating virtual targets extracted from a simulation library. According to Airbus DS, it will be possible to derive an unmanned version. It will therefore be, in other words, an "Airbus" version of the Italian M346, its twin the YAK-130 or even Chinese JL-9 and JL-10.
