Can we develop a heavy European high performance helicopter?

After several months of uncertainty, the German authorities have announced terminate the procedure to acquire a heavy helicopter to the United States for replace its fleet of CH-53 arriving at the age limit. Although no additional information on German ambitions in the field has been given, it could well be a unique opportunity for Europe to finally acquire a device of this type, while it represents, after the United States, the most important western world market for this type of military aircraft.

In fact, in addition to Germany, 5 European armies today use this type of aircraft, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom. When in France, it is more by refusal to equip American equipment only for lack of need that it has not used heavy helicopters since the last Super Frelon from Naval Aviation retired from service. The sincere relief of the French forces deployed in Mali and the Sahel as part of Operation Barkhane when the British announced the extension of the mission of its two CH-47 Chinooks deployed on site is the result.
