The situation became tense once again between Chinese and Indian forces in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, at the level of the demarcation zone serving as the de facto border between the two countries. According to a statement issued by the Indian Ministry of Defense, the Chinese forces would have started, on the night of August 19 to 30, 2020, unilaterally a displacement of forces along the southern shore of Lake Pangong Tso, breaking the status quo put in place following clashes between soldiers of the two country last May. The Indian armed forces, too, immediately took a position to strengthen their defensive capabilities and prevent any attempted aggression by China. For the time being, no press release has been released by the Chinese authorities on this subject.
On May 10, 2020, following a similar movement of Chinese PLA soldiers to the demarcation zone, an "unarmed" confrontation between soldiers from both countries resulted in the death of twenty Indian soldiers, and at least as many Chinese soldiers. Following this, the authorities of the two countries announced a return to the status quo established in 1962 during the Sino-Indian war, along the demarcation line which today serves as the border between the two countries, although each of them d 'them have conflicting territorial claims. Since then, and despite announcements of apparent goodwill on both sides, the two camps have significantly increased their military resources deployed in the region, transforming the Himalayan plateau of Ladakh into one of the most densely militarized areas in the world.
