Can artificial intelligence defeat a pilot trained in swirling combat? This is the question to which the DARPA AlphaDogfight Trials program made it his mission to answer. And the third test session will take place at the end of August 2020, according to a statement from the U.S. Defense research agency released on August 7. But the objective sought by this program goes well beyond the simple "Replacement of pilots", as mentioned by Elon Musk few months ago.

It will therefore be eight teams from the best American research laboratories in the field of artificial intelligence who will start by competing against each other on August 18 and 19, the winner seeing himself qualified to face the elite of American F16 pilots. , in simulated close quarters combat. On the first day, the AIs proposed by the 8 participants will face an AI developed by the John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, before competing against each other on the second day, in order to determine which team will have the honor of confronting each other. to a human pilot. This test program is part of a larger program launched in 2019, also piloted by DARPA, the Air Combat Evolution program or ACE, in charge of evaluating, as its name suggests, the technological options that will prove to be decisive in the decades to come in terms of air combat.
