20 programs to strengthen the armies and preserve the French industrial fabric

Between the health and economic crisis linked to the Covid19 virus, and the security crises shaking the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Asia and Eastern Europe, there is no shortage of concerns for French politicians in in charge of defense, public finances and industry. But while these files are now managed in isolation, a global vision would allow us to consider solutions that meet all the needs and contextual requirements.

Strengthening French armies, a pressing need

Although the 2019-2025 Military Programming Law has undoubtedly made it possible to to suppress capacity bleeding which has affected the French armies for over 20 years, it has not, and will not allow, meet the real needs of the military in terms of format and equipment in the coming decade. For the time being, this LPM remains fixed on the quantitative and qualitative objectives defined by the 2013 White Paper, whereas the international situation was quite different, with, for example, a heavy armored force limited to 200 combat tanks, an air force aligning only 185 fighters, and a fleet having only 15 frigates and 6 sub- attack sailors, while the overall format of the armies is established around 205.000 soldiers.
