MGCS: the first agreements are signed between France and Germany on the future European battle tank

On April 28, the French Minister of Armies Florence Parly and the German Minister of Defense Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announced to have signed two key agreements for the MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) next generation tank program. In the current context, this signing did not give rise to an official ceremony, or even to a physical meeting between the two ministers, but it still marks the effective launch of the MGCS.

Scheduled for March or April, this new milestone in the MGCS program had to wait for the financing agreement of the Bundestag budgetary committee. Now that this has been done, a first framework agreement has been signed in order to define the organization of the project as well as the establishment of program management structures in the two countries. Above all, a second implementation agreement was also signed on this occasion.

This Implementing Arrangement 1 will allow France and Germany to commission a study to define the architecture of the future MGCS. This contract should take place over a period of two years, at the end of which it will be possible to move on to the next phase of the program, namely the development of technological demonstrators.

The MGCS will not only relate to a future heavy tank, but also to communication networks and remote vectors, possibly remotely controlled, land and air.
