Due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Thailand could postpone some of its major defense expenditures, including its submarine program with China. This interruption in military purchases, however, would not be caused by the country's health situation, but rather by economic and political considerations.
In fact, in terms of health, Thailand has been relatively little impacted by the coronavirus epidemic which has hit China hard. For the time being, only around thirty people have died of SARS-CoV-2 in Thailand, compared to more than 60.000 in Europe, to date. Already affected by SARS in 2002, the country seems to have quickly implemented measures to protect the population.
However, as elsewhere in the world, these protective measures have only been possible by limiting interactions between people, and therefore the bulk of local activity in the country. Worse from an economic point of view, the global scale of the epidemic has dried up two of the country's main sources of income: tourism and the export of manufactured products (electronics, computers, textiles). Strongly established in the global economy, Thailand can only suffer from the global health crisis, even though the coronavirus epidemic is under control on its territory.
