DARPA wants to develop an unmanned logistics transport fleet

During the Cold War, the US Navy command in charge of heavy logistical transports, or Sea Lift Command, had at its disposal a large fleet of logistical transport ships to, if necessary, be able to transport forces and the equipment of the American continent in Europe in order to be able to oppose a possible attack by the Warsaw Pact forces. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the eradication of the perceived threat in Europe, this command saw its resources reduced to the strict minimum. In fact, today, the average age of ships in service for this mission exceeds 40 years, and there is no no new vessel replacement program, while the threat, it is beautiful and has reappeared with the significant strengthening of Russian military power, and more than increasing tensions in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

To meet this need, DARPA has just launched a program aimed at creating technological solutions allowing not only to design unmanned autonomous logistics transport vessels, but to give them the capacity to dynamically form transatlantic convoys at high speed so that, once arrived, separate and head towards their respective ports of destination.
