In May 2018, a video posted on social media showed the destruction of a Syrian Pantsir S1 anti-aircraft system by what was identified as an Israeli IAI Harop suicide drone. The Pantsir, which at the time was on the move, failed to detect or engage the threat, leading to its destruction. This was not the only example of this type, since several Syrian and Russian armored vehicles were allegedly destroyed by kamikaze drones used by opponents of the Bashar Al Assad regime, during the movements of the anti-aircraft defense responsible for ensure protection.
Obviously, these actions were carefully analyzed by the Russian General Staff, since, according to the daily Izvestia, Russian forces equipped with Pantsir and Tor-M2 systems will soon acquire the capacity to fire on the move, so as to no longer expose themselves, nor the forces and infrastructures that they must protect, during the repositioning phases, which are essential to ensure their protection, and the effectiveness of their assignment.
According to the Russian daily, at the beginning of 2020, an experiment will be carried out to modify the training of crews of the TOR and Pantsir systems, so as to acquire the ability to fire on the move. According to what is described, it does not seem that a modification or modernization of systems is necessary, the evolution relating only to training. If the experience proves conclusive, the approach will then be generalized, so as to offer this capacity to all systems and their crews in service.
